Wing shape differences along a migration route of the long-distance migrant Globe Skimmer Dragonfly Pantala flavescens

چکیده

Abstract Animals which migrate by flying should be subject to selection for optimal wing characteristics that maximize energy efficiency during migration. We investigated shape and area variation in the Globe Skimmer Dragonfly Pantala flavescens , has longest known migration of any insect. Wing differences between individuals southern Peninsular India, migrating at a stop-over site on Maldives, were compared. Results suggest successfully reached their way from India Africa, had broader base an overall more slender than India. Contrary our expectations, did not differ significantly most comparisons suggesting is important successful P. . The results provide indirect evidence natural dragonfly.

Isotopic Evidence That Dragonflies (Pantala flavescens) Migrating through the Maldives Come from the Northern Indian Subcontinent

Large numbers of the Globe Skimmer dragonfly (Pantala flavescens) appear in the Maldives every October-December. Since they cannot breed on these largely waterless islands, it has recently been suggested that they are "falling out" during a trans-oceanic flight from India to East Africa. In addition, it has been suggested that this trans-oceanic crossing is just one leg of a multi-generational ...

A Global Population Genetic Study of Pantala flavescens

Among terrestrial arthropods, the dragonfly species Pantala flavescens is remarkable due to their nearly global distribution and extensive migratory ranges; the largest of any known insect. Capable of migrating across oceans, the potential for high rates of gene flow among geographically distant populations is significant. It has been hypothesized that P. flavescens may be a global panmictic po...

Structural Analysis of a Dragonfly Wing

Dragonfly wings are highly corrugated, which increases the stiffness and strength of the wing significantly, and results in a lightweight structure with good aerodynamic performance. How insect wings carry aerodynamic and inertial loads, and how the resonant frequency of the flapping wings is tuned for carrying these loads, is however not fully understood. To study this we made a three-dimensio...

Effect of Geolocators on Migration and Subsequent Breeding Performance of a Long-Distance Passerine Migrant

Geolocators are small light-weight data loggers used to track individual migratory routes, and their use has increased exponentially in birds. However, the effects of geolocators on individual performance are still poorly known. We studied geolocator effects on a long-distance migrating passerine bird, the northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe L.). We asked the general question of whether geoloc...

Repeatability of individual migration routes, wintering sites, and timing in a long‐distance migrant bird

Migratory birds are often faithful to wintering (nonbreeding) sites, and also migration timing is usually remarkably consistent, that is, highly repeatable. Spatiotemporal repeatability can be of advantage for multiple reasons, including familiarity with local resources and predators as well as avoiding the costs of finding a new place, for example, nesting grounds. However, when the environmen...
